My parents had waited until the end of the second world war to have a child and I was born on 6th May 1946 in the War Memorial hospital Carshalton. At this time they were renting a flat in Wynash Gardens, Carshalton which is where I lived for the first 17 years. It provided a relatively safe area for playing and exploring with my friends. Every November 5th would see bonfires on the central green (iin those days a dissused tennis court. The early holidays I remember were spent in St Mary’s Bay in Kent through which the famous Romney Hythe & Dymchurch railway passed. The Railway was a fascination for me and the walk to it passed by the old Bakery where we would collect Bread and Jam Donuts. I also recall that my father contructed large model airplanes or boats on the sandy beach for me and friends to play in .I remember in 1953 that my parents bought a Pye console TV and along with several neighboours we crowded around it to watch the coronation
